On this 125th year anniversary of the birth of Karl King in 1891, conductor Jimmerson had planned a special tribute to the maestro. It was on Sunday, March 14, 1971, that Mr. King conducted his final concert in Fort Dodge – almost 45 years ago to the day. About two weeks later, on March 31, Karl King died at a local hospital. Little did anyone know at the time that he would be gone so soon after that event.
The first four selections on this program were performed by the Fort Dodge Municipal Band during Conductor Karl L. King’s last Fort Dodge concert held at the Corpus Christi Parish Center on Sunday, March 14, 1971, about 2 weeks before his death.
*March: Irish Patrol………………………………………………………..George Drumm
*Selection: Gems of Ireland…………………………………………..arr. Geo. D. Barnard
*Waltz: Old Timers…………………………………………………………arr. M.L. Lake
*The Irish Washerwoman…………………………………………………Leroy Anderson
During that final concert, Mr. King conducted George Drumm’s “Irish Patrol”, Geo. Barnard’s “Gems of Ireland”, Leroy Anderson’s “The Irish Washerwoman” from his Irish Suite, and “Old Timer’s Waltz”, by M.L. Lake. Conductor Jimmerson was in his 11th season as a member of the band under Karl King’s baton, and played in that concert. Mr. Jimmerson chose to repeat these four selections again to honor his former mentor and conductor, Karl King.
