Thomas J. Hatton's Hawkeye Glory has just now been published
and is available from the King Band for $15.
"Hawkeye Glory: The History of the Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge, Iowa, is an easy read and full of great detail on the origins and history of a great Iowa institution. Author Thomas Hatton carries his readers from the early days of the Pumpkinville Tooters through the era of Carl Quist, who was the heart and soul of the band for 20 years, and for the half-century of devotion that began on Sept. 17, 1920, when Karl King picked up the baton. I cannot recommend this book enough."
A videotape is also available for purchase. This video was originally recorded by Iowa Public Television in 1991, when the King band performed a concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Karl King. This marks the first time that IPTV has granted permission for any group to reproduce and sell one of their programs, and a limited number are available for public sale.
This concert also features the music of Karl King and other composers.
Guest soloist was Brian Bowman, on euphonium. At the time, Mr. Bowman
was a member of the U. S. Air Force Band. Prior to that, he had been
a member of the U. S. Navy Band, and the select Bicentennial Band. This
concert was an historic event, and one that persons will want to collect
and watch again and again.
In addition, a Compact Disc of King and King-related marches is also offered by the King Band. On it you will hear King favorites like Robinson's Grand Entry, Walking Frog, Samson, Circus Days, and Spirit of Minstrelsy, and six other marches by Karl King. Also included are six marches by current and former members or directors of the King Band, including Reginal Schive, John Erickson, W. B. Green, and Dick Johnson. This CD can be purchased for $15.
All proceeds from the sale of the King Band CD and Video will go to the Oleson Park Bandshell Restoration Project.
